Jersey shore, Teen Mom (One and Two),
and the Real House Wives series – all are modern reality TV shows that have
corrupted the minds of children and changed the entertainment industry as a
whole. These shows take concepts and events that once only happened in
fictional movies and alter the perception of what real life is to many. These
series not only affect the lives of those in the entertainment industry, but
have also brought about a rapid proliferation of shows that are “garbage” and a
decrease in educational television shows.
Reality television shows try and
depict the characters’ real lives. Although these images are probably not
reality, many viewers still expect actual celebrities to exhibit this behavior
in their everyday existence. I would contend that many celebrities are now
“acting out” in a way that makes their lives look as exciting as the characters
they portray in the shows. Drugs, alcohol abuse, and continuous drama are all
predominate features of these shows. Today, many actors and actresses are
coming out about drug and alcohol addictions. In the past, these were kept
quiet; however, now that it is the “cool” thing, many individuals are now
speaking up about their problems. Yes, I would agree that those who do have
alcohol should receive help, but I do not believe one would need to tell the
world about it. Drama, another thing emphasized by reality TV, is also
published on the front page of many magazines now, due in large part to these
shows.
In recent years, these shows have
increased in number because they are viewed as “hip.” In past years, there were
only a few shows of this nature. Currently, one cannot change channels without
seeing numerous reality television shows. America’s Next Top Model, The Bad
Girls Club, Rob & Big – where does the list end? Those where only some of
the series on as I am writing this. Obviously, these television shows have made
the entertainment industry as a whole switch to this type of entertainment: a
false reality that many children believe is real.
While the entertainment industry may
not have been the most educational, some of the things it promoted were.
Previously, television stations that now show only these horrid shows gave more
educational shows, such as the history of a musical genre, air time. Other
shows these channels used to play were things not only supporting education,
but also actual culture. Music accentuated the current generation’s culture,
whether good or bad, whereas “smut” TV only show foolish drama.
Reality television has changed the
entertainment industry for the worse. It is influencing the celebrities in a
way that promotes outrageous behavior. These stars and starlets are the ones that
the children of America look up to. These shows have drastically rapidly
appeared in preceding years and are only growing number, taking away precious
time from more valuable shows that promote education and culture. We have no
reason to let these atrocities continue.
